Colaj 2018

2018, incadrat in seria ultimilor 2 ani,

inceput cu pesimism — din cauza contextului politic local — si terminat in frustrare si furie (nu sunt deloc un fan al resemnarii!) din cauza aceluiasi context politic, 2018 a fost o amestecatura — mai elegant spus, un colaj, o colectie de experiente, realizari, esecuri, bucurii, stangacii, enervari, revelatii, prostii si prostioare, victorii (mici!), confuzii, indoieli, fantasme, samd; oricum, in mod cert — nimic fluid, nimic inchegat, lipsa unui intreg la care sa fi pus umarul, despre care sa poti spune ceva remarcabil. Un an minor (ca sa ramanem eleganti in exprimare)!

Desi:

  • Am reusit primul nostru proiect mare in Singapore — Geneco, pe care in sfarsit il putem vedea pe strazile de acolo, dupa ce a fost si premiat international –,
  • Editia internationala Branding on the Eastern Front este pe Amazon si pe raftul de ‘branding’ din librariile Kinokuniya Singapore,
  • Am livrat doua proiecte foarte mari, aici in Romania, pe care clientii le vor lansa in 2019 — in utilitati si FMCG,
  • I-am ajutat pro-bono pe unii dintre cei care ne ajuta sa avem o societate mai buna — Daruieste Viata si RO+ (PLUS),
  • Am lansat noua identitate a Echipei Nationale de Fotbal — probabil singurul nostru logo adorat prin sarut de cei care-l poarta,
  • Ne-am ocupat ca de obicei de o parte dintre clientii nostri strategici — Transavia, Dedeman, Delaco, QFort, BT, Heineken, Budureasca, Angst etc,
  • Brandingul de angajator a mai urcat niste trepte in topul serviciilor cerute de clienti in zilele astea,
  • Am iesit cu totii in piata Victoriei, seara si in weekend-uri, si “am pus tara la cale” la nesfarsit (desi acesta este, poate, singurul build-up al anului!),
  • Ne-au plecat oameni in care am investit mult, si exact cand ne asteptam sa inceapa un “return on investment”,
  • Am angajat oameni noi foarte buni, si avem acum probabil the best team ever, inclusv doi Managing Directors (in Bucuresti si Singapore),
  • Ne-am mutat intr-un nou sediu, dupa 10 ani de vietuire intr-una dintre cele mai frumoase case interbelice din Bucuresti,
  • Cip a implinit 10 ani in companie si este primul angajat care va beneficia de ‘free summer Fridays’ si vacante platite pentru inspiratie (Kit zice ca si el are dreptul, si militeaza acum pentru un tratatment egal intre antreprenor si angajat :),
  • La sfarsitul acestui an am inceput un proiect impreuna cu curajoasa echipa a primarului Bolojan din Oradea, care — daca va reusi, speram sa readuca credinta in valoarea reala a brandingului de destinatie,
  • Avem doi client strategici care in decembrie ne-au povestit despre planurile lor pentru 2019 — si ne-au dat astfel speranta ca in tara asta nu mor caii cand vor cainii,
  • Am ratat un proiect mare in care, in mod atat de neasteptat, o echipa de romani se straduieste — prin nestiinta si umoare personala, sa distruga un brand romanesc,
  • Am fost concediati de un român pe motiv ca suntem români (“noi suntem acum o firma internatională, nu putem lucra cu o firma romaneasca de branding” — wow!!!!!),
  • Am pierdut pitch-uri de oferta in Asia fiindca nu am fost acolo cand clientul a cerut sa ne vedem, desi am calatorit iar prea mult si resimtim tot mai mult povara acestui comportament de calator peste oceane,
  • Ne-am despartit amiabil de oameni care ne-au tratat neamiabil, am pariat pe proiecte care ne-au consumat timpul, dar nu au iesit, am fost (prea?) toleranti in fata ciudățeniilor unor parteneri si, ca de obicei — prea idealisti (asta, insa, ne tine in viata!)…

Hm, daca stiu ceva sigur despre mine, Kit, Mihai si echipa pe care o conducem, este ca nu suntem oameni care se sperie prea usor — mai degraba ne comportam ca un task force, decat ca o companie, si dupa atata aventura si pionierat si incercari, pot spune ca suntem sever superdotati cu ambitie, putere de munca, disciplina si optimism. Am ales in viata asta, la maturitate, sa credem ca putem sa facem, ca putem sa schimbam, ca putem sa traim in Romania, cum vrem noi, nu cum ni se impune de catre niste infractori.

Si totusi, …

gandul asta pervers, revine mereu, in ultimul timp, la inceputul fiecarui an nou: oare nu cumva Romania ma impiedica sa devin omul care doresc sa devin, odata cu trecerea mea prin viata? Oare nu cumva Romania imi impiedica firma pe care am construit-o atat de greu si de pasional, sa devina ceea merita, dupa 17 ani de rock’n roll estic?!

Hahaha!!! “Life is a tale told by an idiot”

Cum altfel (decat râzând) să ne despărțim de 2017?

Să vedem:

Se pare că industria din care face parte Brandient se “reinventează” — marile grupuri de servicii de comunicare fie comasează companiile specializate (vezi comunicatul WPP “Brand Union, The Partners, Lambie-Nairn, Addison Group and VBAT to combine”), fie pur si simplu își inchid filialele (legendara MetaDesign tocmai a anuntat inchiderea a 3 filiale în Europa si SUA); în timp ce marile grupuri devin pe zi ce trece tot mai unfit cu timpurile, companiile mici de design si brand innovation sunt, mai nou, curtate de marile consultanțe de business și fonduri de investiții (înțeleg ratiunea economica, dar mor de curiozitate să vad cum ar putea să funcționeze împreuna).

Este pregatita clasa profesionala romaneasca a comunicatorilor pentru a face fata noului context social si economic?

Despre nevoia de repozitionare prin knowledge a breslei comunicatorilor

Au trecut mai bine de doua decenii si jumatate de cand Romania s-a despartit de comunism, intrand — nu direct in capitalism, ci intr-o continua, parca nesfarsita stare de tranzitie, denumita academic “societate transformativa” (transformative society). Economic vorbind, ca mai toate tarile din Estul post comunist al Europei, Romania a savurat o crestere exacerbata a cererii de “orice” — de la bunuri de consum si servicii bancare, de tehnologie, de retail, farmaceutice – la idei si aspiratii, si astfel si-a atras un statut de tara emergenta, cu efectele bune, si mai putin bune, ale emergentei generate de boom-ul in consum. Wally Olins: a tribute from the Eastern front

Along with Wally Olins, an era in branding is gone — a golden era, when brands had guts, vision, authenticity and loyal fans. However, he left us with all his learning and the blueprint for the future. It’s not for nothing that his last book is titled “Brand New: The Shape of Brands to Come”.

He always seemed to know the future, and was happy to share it with everybody. But, unlike the prophets of old, he didn’t speak in riddles, but in plain English. So plain that some people told me after his first conference in Bucharest in 2003: “What’s the big fuss about Wally? All that he said, wealready knew.” Sweet innocence! — only two hours of Wally were enough to sweep away their previous confusion and ignorance, just like an injection with branding truth serum. His congenial approach encouraged even his most unconditional admirers to take his greatness for granted: “he will always be here, we can always ask Wally about it”. Sadly, not anymore. But we still have his books, over which he confessed going through twenty times, back and forth, before publishing: “the first draft was twice as thick, and finally it got thinner”. In the process he also avoided the occult, esoteric jargon so exhausted by the lesser gifted in the industry.

Brand, casa regala, Romania

In toamna lui 2003, Wally Olins venea la Bucuresti, pentru a sustine prima conferinta dedicata brandingului de natiune. L-am intampinat la aeroport, impreuna cu asiciatii mei si dupa imbratisarile de rigoare, Wally – care punea pentru prima oara piciorul pe pamant romanesc – a intrebat: ‘So, what’s new with the Romanian Royal Family?’

Am fost luati prin surprindere atat de tare, ca ne-am abtinut greu sa nu scapam un ‘I beg your pardon?!”. Si fiindca chiar nu am stiut ce sa-i raspundem, mai mult decat ‘We believe they are well, thank you for asking’, atunci, Wally – istoric ca educatie si profesor la Oxford, s-a simtit dator sa ne predea intr-o lectie scurta si coplesitoare  cateva invataturi de baza despre regalitatea romaneasca, inclusiv amanunte inedite despre legatura romantica a printesei Margareta cu fostul prim ministru al Marii Britanii – Gordon Brown, pe cand erau studenti la Edinburgh University☺. Intr-un fel, Wally pasea prima oara pe pamantul romanesc cu foarte putine certitudini, si una dintre ele era, fara indoiala, Familia regala romaneasca inrudita cu Familia regala britanica.

Brand, Royal House, Romania

In the fall of 2003 Wally Olins came to Bucharest to deliver his speech for the first conference dedicated to nation branding. I welcomed him at the airport together with my partners and during the first minutes of our conversation, Wally—who was setting foot for the first time on Romanian land—asked us: ”So, what’s new with the Romanian Royal Family?”

We were so astounded by his question, that we hardly refrained from replying ”I beg your pardon?!” Not knowing how else to tackle this question, we simply responded We believe they are well, thank you for asking at which point Wally Olins—professor of History at Oxford University—felt compelled to teach us some short yet overwhelming facts about the Romanian Royalty, including some undisclosed details of the romantic liaison between HRH Princess Margaret and former prime minister of Great Britain, Gordon Brown, while students at the University of Edinburgh.

In brand we trust. About branding and integrity

In the spring of 1998 Connex (Note: the Romanian telecom player subsequently acquired by Vodafone) launched a campaign—I don’t know if you remember it, as it had short media exposure and was rather modest in appearance compared to other campaigns of the brand. Nevertheless, looking back with a bit more wisdom, I find that campaign astonishingly correct in a strategic sense!

That campaign was called “Count on me” and it was a testimonial of the Connex CEO, where he promised the best national coverage and best quality of sound (basically what mattered the most in that stage of the newly born mobile phone category on the Romanian market). Al Tolstoy appeared in a 45 sec TV commercial saying that he believed in this vision and that—long story short—we had his word that Connex would become under his management the most trusted mobile phone operator in Romania.

Introspectii in vreme de criza

Despre procesele de rebranding organizational

Mai aproape de business si de organizatie decat de marketing si comunicare, rebranding-ul este, cu siguranta, cea mai profunda metamorfoza pe care o poate incerca o companie.

Orice rebranding porneste din interior, cu o privire exhaustiva asupra organizatiei si business-ului, trece prin intelegerea contextului extern si se manifesta apoi in tot ceea ce este, in tot ceea ce face, in tot ceea ce spune organizatia respectiva. De la identitatea primara a brandului – nume, logo, simbolistica, cromatica, imagistica – la atitudinea angajatilor, tonul vocii si pana la cele mai mici detalii, totul trebuie sa intregeasca promisiunea pe care acel brand isi propune s-o livreze. Nimic mai simplu, aparent.

Authenticity in branding

Dana invited me to write about branding for pr-romania.ro, a tempting invitation as I feel professionally and structurally rather close to PR as a discipline and a communication and networking practice. Simply put, I see PR more related to branding than it might look at first glance. Dana even suggested to me a list of topics that would interest PR people that I was initially tempted to discard; however, when I looked closer, my eyes fell on “authenticity and integrity in brand building”. Ouch! Dana couldn’t have struck a more sensible chord!

In any case, the subject will be treated in two different episodes: Today I shall write about authenticity and in a future essay about integrity. I have to warn those who read me for the first time that I have an undisguised capacity to kill sacred cows—I don’t do it to shock, but rather from a pragmatic spirit that which forces me to put aside whatever blocks me in any way (and for some intellectual entertainment too… to be honest).
